Your Flexible Patagonia Adventure in Torres del Paine 

Discover the remarkable wildlife of Chilean Patagonia on a gentle safari through the Vega Castillo Wetlands, a privately protected natural area located beyond Torres del Paine National Park in the Bahía El Bote sector.

After leaving EcoCamp Patagonia, we travel through the open landscapes of the greater Torres del Paine region toward Estancia Vega Castillo. Here, more than 450 hectares of wetlands, reed beds, Patagonian grasslands, and native lenga forest create an important habitat for birds and other local wildlife.

During an easy guided walk, we take time to observe and photograph the animals that inhabit this diverse ecosystem. Depending on the season and conditions, possible sightings include coscoroba swans, white-winged coots, upland geese, black-faced ibises, wild ducks, great grebes, spectacled tyrants, Andean condors, and black-chested buzzard-eagles. We may also encounter guanacos, foxes, or the distinctive large hairy armadillo.

Suitable for travelers of different ages and abilities, this relaxed Patagonia wildlife safari provides a quieter alternative to the more demanding trekking routes of Torres del Paine. It is an opportunity to slow down, explore a lesser-visited corner of southern Chile, and learn about the conservation of the region’s wetlands and native fauna.

After breakfast, we set out on a scenic journey across Torres del Paine National Park toward the park’s western region and the Grey Glacier sector, shaped by the Southern Patagonian Ice Field.

Along the way, we pause at selected viewpoints to admire the dramatic peaks of the Paine Massif, including Paine Grande, the park’s highest peak, and the unmistakable Los Cuernos, whose dark sedimentary caps contrast sharply with their lighter granite walls. We travel alongside scenic Lake Nordenskjöld, with excellent opportunities for landscape photography.

Upon reaching the Lake Grey sector, we begin an easy walk across the broad, windswept Grey Beach toward the navigation’s boarding point. The trail follows sandy and gravelly terrain, with views of the lake and, on some days, floating icebergs near the shore.

We then board the Grey III vessel for an unforgettable navigation across the glacial waters of Lake Grey. As we approach Grey Glacier, immense walls of blue ice, sculpted formations, and drifting icebergs reveal one of the most impressive landscapes in Chilean Patagonia. Weather and ice conditions permitting, the boat visits the glacier’s different fronts, offering privileged views from the water.

After the navigation, we walk back across Grey Beach and begin the return journey through Torres del Paine National Park to EcoCamp Patagonia.

Please note that the Grey Glacier navigation is subject to availability, weather conditions, ice conditions, and the operator’s minimum passenger requirement. Cancellations are more likely during September and May, when demand and navigation frequency may be lower. When the boat trip cannot operate, the excursion will be replaced by the Salto Grande and Condor Lookouts, offering panoramic views of Lake Pehoé, Los Cuernos, and the Paine Massif.

After breakfast, we collect our box lunches and set out on a scenic drive across the southern landscapes of Torres del Paine National Park. Our journey takes us toward Estancia Lazo and the vivid waters of Laguna Verde, where we begin the spectacular Lazo-Weber Trail.

Considered one of the park’s finest off-the-beaten-path hikes, this peaceful route offers a different perspective of Torres del Paine, far from the busier trails of the W Trek. Throughout the hike, the dramatic Paine Massif remains visible to our right, revealing changing views of Paine Grande, Los Cuernos, and the surrounding mountains as we cross open grasslands and native forests.

The trail follows mostly gentle and undulating terrain, passing through one of the quieter lenga forests in Torres del Paine National Park. Along the way, we discover native Patagonian flora, listen for woodland birds, and keep watch for wildlife such as guanacos, foxes, and soaring Andean condors. Wildlife encounters vary naturally and cannot be guaranteed.

We pause beside the secluded Laguna Honda to enjoy our picnic lunch and take in the silence, fresh air, and pristine scenery. From here, the route gradually climbs toward the Lake Toro Viewpoint, the great reward of the Lazo-Weber hike. From this viewpoint, you can admire one of the most expansive panoramas in the entire national park, with breathtaking views across the southern and western sectors of Torres del Paine, the waters of Lake Toro, and the network of channels in the Serrano area.

The final section follows a steep descent over loose gravel toward the Paine River and Weber Bridge, where our vehicle will be waiting. Before returning to EcoCamp Patagonia, we take another moment to look for wildlife and appreciate the vast landscapes of southern Patagonia.

Please note that the final descent may be uncomfortable for travelers who experience vertigo, as it crosses a steep and exposed section with loose gravel. Trekking poles are strongly recommended. If weather or trail conditions do not allow the excursion to operate safely, an alternative activity will be provided.

After breakfast, we travel through the vast landscapes of the Torres del Paine region toward Estancia Dos Elianas, a traditional Magellanic sheep farm where Patagonian nature, rural culture, and local hospitality come together.

Upon arrival, the estancia team welcomes us with a brief introduction to horseback riding techniques and essential safety guidelines. No previous riding experience is required, making this cultural excursion an accessible way to discover the Patagonian countryside from a new perspective.

We then set out on an approximately two-hour round-trip horseback ride toward Sierra Ballena. Following peaceful trails across the open Magellanic pampa, we experience the immensity of southern Patagonia, surrounded by rolling grasslands, distant mountains, grazing livestock, and the ever-present Patagonian wind.

Back at the estancia, we gather for a traditional lunch featuring slow-roasted Patagonian lamb accompanied by locally inspired preparations. More than a meal, this is an opportunity to experience one of the most emblematic culinary traditions of Chilean Patagonia.

During a guided visit around the property, we learn about life on a working estancia and the importance of sheep farming to the history and identity of the Magallanes Region. Depending on the season and the estancia’s daily activities, we may observe local arrieros working with horses and livestock or learn about traditional practices such as sheep shearing and wool production.

Before returning to EcoCamp Patagonia, we enjoy a relaxed afternoon snack of freshly prepared sopaipillas, bread, cheese, preserves, and other local flavors. We arrive back at our domes at approximately 5:30 PM after a memorable day immersed in the landscapes, traditions, and warm hospitality of rural Patagonia.

Please note that the number of horses is limited, and horseback riding is subject to availability. When horses are unavailable, this portion of the experience may be replaced with another activity at the estancia.

During September and May, the Traditional Patagonian Estancia Day is replaced by the Condor and Salto Grande Lookouts excursion in Torres del Paine National Park.

Discover one of the most peaceful and geologically fascinating landscapes in Torres del Paine National Park on the Ancient Shores hike at Lake Sarmiento. Far from the park’s busier trekking routes, this gentle nature walk combines Patagonian wildlife, remarkable rock formations, and thousands of years of natural history.

We begin by exploring striking folds of sedimentary rock before descending toward the narrow isthmus separating Lake Sarmiento from Lake Sarmiento Chico, two bodies of water that were once part of the same ancient lake system. As we walk through the open Patagonian steppe, we keep watch for guanacos, grebes, and other native birds inhabiting the surrounding grasslands and lakeshores.

The trail eventually reaches a secluded bay on the western shore of Lake Sarmiento, where vivid blue waters contrast with pale mineral formations along the coast. Here, we discover the lake’s extraordinary thrombolites: ancient, rock-like structures formed through the activity of microbial communities. These formations provide a fascinating glimpse into the geological and biological processes that have shaped this corner of Chilean Patagonia.

Weather permitting, we continue along the approximately 3.5 km Laguna Larga trail and enjoy our picnic lunch beside the water. Surrounded by the silence of the Patagonian landscape, this easy hike offers a rewarding combination of science, wildlife observation, and tranquil scenery in Torres del Paine National Park.

After breakfast, we travel to the eastern side of Torres del Paine National Park to begin the Aonikenk Trail, also known locally as the Portería-Portería route. This peaceful one-way hike connects the Sarmiento and Laguna Amarga entrances, crossing vast open landscapes.

The trail follows ancient routes associated with the Aonikenk, an Indigenous people who traveled across the Patagonian plains long before the creation of the national park. As we walk, panoramic views open toward Lake Sarmiento, the surrounding mountains, and the rugged rock formations of eastern Torres del Paine.

This region is also known for its rich Patagonian wildlife. We keep watch for herds of guanacos, foxes, and soaring birds of prey. The trail crosses an important wildlife corridor, so we may also encounter signs of the elusive Patagonian puma, although sightings are never guaranteed.

One of the highlights of the hike is a natural rock shelter containing ancient cave paintings. These remarkable traces provide a direct connection to the ancestral peoples of Patagonia and offer insight into the human history of Torres del Paine National Park, a landscape shaped not only by glaciers and mountains but also by thousands of years of cultural heritage.

After visiting the archaeological site, we continue through open steppe and low shrubland before gradually descending toward the Laguna Amarga entrance, where our vehicle will be waiting. We then return to EcoCamp Patagonia, leaving the afternoon free to relax in the domes and enjoy the views of the Paine Massif.

This easy half-day hike is ideal for travelers seeking a quieter alternative to the classic W Trek, combining scenic walking, wildlife observation, and the Indigenous history of Chilean Patagonia.

After breakfast, we travel across Torres del Paine National Park toward the Lake Grey and Pingo sector, where we begin the demanding hike to Ferrier Lookout.

Rising above the park’s western landscapes, Cerro Ferrier reaches an elevation of 1,599 m s. n. m. / 5,246 ft ASL. Our excursion does not climb to its summit; instead, we follow a steep out-and-back trail to a spectacular viewpoint located at approximately 650 m s. n. m. / 2,133 ft ASL.

The ascent begins beneath the canopy of a beautiful native Patagonian forest. As the trail climbs rapidly, we pass lenga, coigüe, and ñire trees, discovering the remarkable diversity of the southern forests found around Lake Grey. The terrain can be steep, root-covered, and uneven, making this a compact but physically demanding hike.

This western area of Torres del Paine is also part of the habitat of the elusive huemul, an endangered South Andean deer and one of Chile’s most emblematic native animals. The huemul is a protected Natural Monument and appears alongside the Andean condor on Chile’s national coat of arms. Sightings are uncommon and cannot be guaranteed, but the hike offers an opportunity to learn about the species and the importance of protecting its remaining habitat.

As we emerge above the tree line, the forest gives way to an exposed alpine landscape shaped by powerful Patagonian winds. From Ferrier Lookout, we are rewarded with one of the most expansive panoramas in western Torres del Paine National Park, overlooking Lake Grey, Grey Glacier, the Pingo Valley, and the vast Southern Patagonian Ice Field.

After taking time to enjoy the scenery and capture photographs, we descend carefully along the same steep trail and return to the Pingo sector. From there, we travel back through Torres del Paine National Park to EcoCamp Patagonia.

Because the upper viewpoint is highly exposed, the excursion is subject to weather, wind, and trail conditions.

We then continue to Salto Grande, one of the most powerful and accessible waterfalls in Torres del Paine. Here, the turquoise waters leaving Lake Nordenskjöld flow through a narrow section of the Paine River before plunging toward Lake Pehoé. The waterfall is especially impressive on windy days, when the force of the Patagonian weather adds to the dramatic scenery.

From Salto Grande, we follow an easy trail across open Patagonian terrain toward Los Cuernos Viewpoint. As we walk, sweeping views open over Lake Nordenskjöld and the central Paine Massif. At the viewpoint, the distinctive granite walls and dark sedimentary caps of Los Cuernos rise above the surrounding lakes, valleys, and grasslands, creating one of the most recognizable panoramas in Torres del Paine National Park.

We then travel to the Lake Pehoé sector for lunch near Camping Pehoé. This area is also a good place to watch for native birds and other Patagonian wildlife.

After lunch, we begin the ascent to Condor Lookout. The trail leads to an elevated ridge overlooking Lake Pehoé. Although the route is relatively short, the ascent is steep in places and can be exposed to strong winds.

From the summit, we are rewarded with a spectacular panorama across Lake Pehoé, the Paine Massif, the lower Paine River, and the vast western landscapes of Torres del Paine.

After enjoying the views, we carefully descend along the same trail and return by vehicle to EcoCamp Patagonia.

Because Condor Lookout is highly exposed, the itinerary may be adjusted according to wind, weather, and trail conditions.

After breakfast, we travel toward Laguna Azul, one of the most peaceful and scenic areas on the eastern side of Torres del Paine National Park. Known for its blue waters and distant views of the granite Towers, this lesser-visited sector offers a quieter introduction to the landscapes and rural traditions of Chilean Patagonia.

After passing Laguna Azul, we continue toward the Las Chinas River, where our horses and local riding team will be waiting. Following a safety briefing, we begin a gentle horseback ride through open Patagonian countryside, crossing shallow river sections as we make our way toward the impressive Las Chinas Waterfall.

Along the route, we enjoy views of the Las Chinas Valley, the surrounding steppe, and the mountains of the greater Torres del Paine region.

Travelers who prefer not to ride can enjoy a gentle walk along the banks of the Las Chinas River, with beautiful perspectives of the Paine Massif, or relax in the traditional barbecue area while taking in the silence and open landscapes of Patagonia.

After the morning’s activities, we gather for a traditional Patagonian barbecue. Depending on availability, lunch may include roasted beef, lamb, or hamburgers, with vegetarian, vegan, and gluten-free alternatives available. Surrounded by the Patagonian countryside, this relaxed meal is a fitting conclusion to a day combining horseback riding, regional flavors, and nature near Torres del Paine.

We then return to EcoCamp Patagonia for a well-earned rest in our domes.
